- ESOL News Oregon This site has news about Oregon in several reading levels, from beginning to advanced.
- ESOL Reading Comprehension Practice from Seminole State College (Florida)
- LearnFree Reading & Learn English (Goodwill Community Foundation). There's a lot of reading and listening here. Very high tech! If you use this site in a lab, you should use headphones.
- Library2Go! From the Oregon Digital Library Consortium. This site offers free books—including audiobooks—that you can download to your computer or mobile device (iphone, ipad, Droid, etc.) To download books, you will need your library card from a major Oregon library and an online password. Then download the software from the Library2Go site that allows you to get access to thousands of books.
- LiteracyNET Story Archives This is a very good web resource for intermediate to advanced ESL students. Read an interesting news story--either abridged or full-length. Do various exercises on vocabulary, comprehension and general reading skills. Check your own answers. Great for self-study!
- Marshall Adult Education Reading Skills for Today's Adults. This is another very good site for self-study. It has short “graded” readings (many different levels) about many different topics. Follow the steps for reading: pre-reading questions, first timed reading, listening to the story, second timed reading, exercises, and so on.
- Newsela This site has thousands of non-fiction readings at different levels with exercises. First, open your Chemeketa Gmail account. Then open another browser window and navigate to the newsela.com site. Register with Gmail. Use this class code: GPW5ZS, and begin reading.
- News for You This is a great site for reading practice! It is a special newspaper for adult ESOL learners. The articles are written using easier language. There are also good exercises for the articles. For access to the site, type this code into the box that says, "Enter your News for You password:" BD5F86
- PETT Projects: Reading Skills Tutorials Good reading skills development exercises and quizzes from Seminole State College (Florida).
- ReadTheory Similar to Newsela, this site has lots of readings on many topics and at different levels. Make an (free) account, make some choices about level and topic, and begin reading.
- ReadWorks This reading site has many good readings and exercises. To participate, go to https://www.readworks.org/student. First, sign in using your Chemeketa Google account. Then use this class code to join our class: 4SCEHH
- Seven Wonders of Oregon This is a travel book that contains beautiful pictures and stories about famous natural places in Oregon. There are exercises for each reading, too.
- Spelling City www.spellingcity.com Use the spelling lists for this class. Try the AWL (Academic Word List) exercises.
- Study Zone from the University of Victoria (Canada). Lots of leveled readings with skill-building and vocabulary exercises.
- The Times in Plain English Here is an international newspaper with stories written in common English. You can also print the articles easily or save them as .pdf files. Print out and use this worksheet to help you read one of the articles. Hand in the worksheet to your instructor to receive credit on your reading lab log. Times report worksheet
